A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"People buying such treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you become starving," said a patient.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle changes.
